Mazda Steering Defect Causes Manufacturer To Recall 2006 to 2012 Model Year Vehicles - | Needham Kepner & Fish

More than 190,000 CX-7 SUVs have been recalled by Mazda Motor Corporation after a potentially dangerous Mazda steering defect was recently discovered. The recall involves Mazda vehicles manufactured from February of 2006 through May of 2012. Last year Mazda recalled about 190,000 CX-9 SUVs after the same steering issue was discovered.

Owners will be notified by the manufacturer and will be instructed to bring their vehicle into a Mazda dealer so the necessary repairs can be made at no charge to owners. The risk associated with the steering defect can lead to catastrophic car accidents and personal injury lawsuits.

What is a Product Safety Defect?

A product safety defect in motor vehicles includes any problem that exists with a motor vehicle or item on or in a the motor vehicle equipment, which creates a risk of motor vehicle safety and may involve a group of vehicles of the same or similar design or manufacture, or safety equipment of the same type and manufacture.

In this situation, the safety risk occurs when water migrates into the front suspension ball joint fittings. The water causes corrosion and ultimately loosens the joint fittings. There is a higher risk in areas where water from roads contain salt as salt is corrosive. When the ball joint is subjected to corrosion, it can cause it to separate from the control arm in the lower suspension, which can result in total loss of steering control.
