In early February, a motorcyclist crashed into a car in an apartment complex parking lot in Sacramento. The motorcyclist, who was said to be going fast, died at the scene. The driver of the car was taken to the hospital with moderate injuries. This accident is a reminder of the importance of safety when you are riding a motorcycle. If you are a motorcyclist, here are some tips you should remember:
- Because of their small size, motorcycles are often hard for drivers to see. Never assume others on the road see you. Be especially careful about being caught in a large vehicle’s blind spot.
- Maintain a safe speed. Your bike’s small size does not mean you can weave quickly between vehicles on the road.
- Let drivers know of your intentions by using your blinker early and consistently.
- If a driver near you is driving erratically or otherwise causing a safety concern, get away from the driver by slowing down, speeding up, or taking an alternate route.
- Slow down when riding on wet roads, when it is foggy, and when traveling through construction zones.
- When riding with other motorcyclists, avoid riding too close together. Stagger the bikes and leave an appropriate distance between bikes, particularly when traveling in heavy traffic.
- Always wear proper protective gear. At the least, California law requires that you wear a U.S. Department of Transportation compliant motorcycle helmet. Other protective gear, such as a leather jacket, closed-toe boots, and full-fingered leather gloves will also help to keep you safer if you are involved in a crash.
